Porsche to unveil 918 Spyder coupe at Detroit show

BERLIN (Bloomberg) -- Porsche SE plans to present a coupe version of its 918 Spyder at the Detroit auto show next week as the sports-car maker returns to the event after four years, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

The two-seater vehicle will be a concept race car with a V8 engine relying on about 600 horsepower, said the people, who asked not to be identified before a Jan. 10 presentation.

The car will be based on the same platform as the 918 Spyder hybrid, a model that soars to 100 km (62 miles) an hour in 3.2 seconds and costs about 500,000 euros ($670,000) in Germany, the people said.

On with thEV Show

We've known for a while that Ford would soon reveal its entry into the EV race, but the venue might be a bit of a shocker.

Speculation in the blogosphere is that the Ford Focus EV will likely make its debut Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a few days ahead of a more traditional debut venue: The Detroit auto show.
The speculation isn't that much of a stretch, really, given the Las Vegas show's increasing importance in the auto sector.

OnStar evolution

General Motors' Onstar unit will make its famous blue-button technology available in the aftermarket later this year, meaning that, by having a special mirror installed at Best Buy, you can put Onstar connectivity in your old Accord, PT Cruiser – heck, even a Bentley - and many other vehicles.

This begs the question: Is GM running a risk of cannibalizing its own business and sales? OnStar is supposed to help GM sell vehicles, not make it more convenient for people who drive competing vehicles to use the same features.

OnStar President Chris Preuss says GM considered this, but one reason it decided to introduce an aftermarket version is the growing competition it faces in built-in telematics.
